The first 6 months of taking the PM Exam Simulator quizzes, I was earning 40 to 60%. When I started getting 70's, I took the exam but failed it. Not to worry. It's worth failing it in order to know what to expect the second time you sit for 4 hours! The last 3 months of taking quizzes, I was consistently in the 80+% range, I knew I could pass the test.

The best course of action that I can recommend for exam preparation, is to first read the PMI book this takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Next take a PMP prep class maybe one to two weeks after completing the book. The Prep class should be one that provides online questions and tutorials. Once you have worked through all questions and completely understand then sign up and utilize the PMP Exam Simulator! This tool was invaluable to me in my preparation and took my understanding of the material to the next level for PMI exam. The questions were aligned with the actual exam and in some cases added a higher degree of difficulty.

I recommend PMP testers to study Network Diagramming and Formulas in their first week. Group and order the Formulas by topic (they will be easier to remember this way) and Saturate your mind with this information early and often. Know how to do Network Diagramming, know how to do forward pass, know how to do backward pass, and know how to calculate Critical Path. There are many excellent study resources/demos on this topic. Also; don't shy away from Formulas, embrace them.
I am a 15+ years of internationally experienced construction project manager holding M. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and MBA degrees. I would say generally speaking depending on your strength you need about 1000 hours of study in this, about 3-4 months 40 hours a week, study 2 months and q and a 2 months. Write down cheat sheet every time you take exam then study your mistakes from the exam. You need to also practice what are you going to do when you go for an actual exam for first 15 minutes? Practice on that.

The 1st thing I would suggest students read is the PMBOK Glossary, so you become familiar with the terms before reading the PMBOK Guide. It’s critical to have a plan and I would suggest giving at least 2 to 3 months of dedicated study time.

To be honest, my goal in starting the PMP process was to find an inexpensive way to get my certification. In that search I found the PrePCast and I listened to the PM Prepcast on the way to and from work and read through the PMBOK. Then I used the OSP exam simulator for a couple weeks before taking the exam.
During the last week before the exam, I would recommend being familiar with your brain dump and the integrated change control processes since many questions tie back to this in one way or another.

The first thing I read was the PMBOK which basically ended after chapter 1. At that time I purchased “How to Pass your PMP on your First Time” and read this book hand in hand with the PMBOK each day. At the end of my studying two weeks before my exam I took practice tests with HeadFirst, Velociteach, and other resources. I was getting great scores (not timed) so I thought I was ready. I kept looking online and in book stores for more exams and would take them until finally I came across the PMP Exam Simulator and failed on my first full length test.

The first thing I read to get familiar with PMP is (what is the whole PMP and PMI deal is?), visited couple of blogs, some online discussions and summaries, basic information that got me hocked on this whole concept.......the first REAL reading in the field was Andy Crowe book; The PMP Exam: How to Pass On your First Try,, Fifth Edition. it is in my opinion the easiest book to get yourself familiar with the concept of PMP.
I have been managing projects for about 15 years. I always wanted to get my PMP, but kept putting it off. I have a pretty hectic work/home schedule with having four small kids and needed to make sure I used my study time wisely. Having a long commute (2 hours a day), the PM Prep Cast was the perfect solution to get in more study hours when my work/home schedule wouldn't allow it.
I purchased the PM Study Coach to help give me a framework of what to study and how long it should take me. As I went through each chapter, I became more confident in what I needed to know to be successful. For each knowledge area I would read a chapter in the PMBOK and the corresponding chapter from Rita Mulcahy, listen to Cornelius in the car, and then answer questions from each along with questions in the PM simulator. For the meatier knowledge areas, my goal was to complete one knowledge area per week. Just like the coach said.

I'm a Captain in the Army who decided that the PMP would be a great way to help my transition into the civilian world this Spring. I've always dealt with complex projects throughout my Army career but I never considered myself a Project Manager until one of my mentors told me about PMI.
What I recommend students to read or study in the first week of their exam preparation is to memorize the 47 processes first and foremost, and learn how they interact with each other. Learning the content of the exam is the key to success.

The 3 things that I recommend that other students should look at:
1. Taking practice exams are absolutely critical. I used The PMP Exam Simulator and found it to have the most challenging and accurate questions. It's hard to take other 'free' practice exams seriously when they are full of grammar and spelling errors!

I used to work for big firms that had sort if internal qualification, so the PMP was to really required for the “old” Project Managers inside. Other story I faced when I left to follow a different growth. The PMP certification is highly regarded and required. Besides, it helps the community of the PM, and the spreading of a common language and a common understanding. I warmly recommend to seriously consider getting certified at earliest.
There is not a better way to get ready. From my personal experience there is nothing that can prepare you for the exam and grant that you will pass it. I learned about The PM PrepCast because I was referred by a friend of a friend who had a long commute to work like me and decided to sign up and optimise my studies.I think the part missing are examples from other industries. Most of examples and cases are always from IT projects, which is a completely different animal from oil & gas and civil projects.
