Hello,

This is my first time going thru PMI's "PMP certification renewal process".

I've submitted all my PDU claims to PMI. My Dashboard shows "0 PDUs remaining to renew", so I've obtained all the necessary PDUs to renew my certification.

I received an email, however, from PMI stating, "You are eligible to renew your PMP credential". It wants me to complete the renewal process and submit payment by logging onto certification.pmi.org .

I'm slightly confused, because I know I've already paid for a PMI membership ($129) and a PMI-OC membership ($35), so now I need to submit another payment ($??) to renew the actual PMP certification? Is this correct?

I'm asking because this is my first time going thru this process.

Also... What is this Company Code business?

What is this Voucher business?

$60 for the PMP certification renewal fee when it's all said & done?

So... $129 (PMI membership) + $35 (PMI-OC membership) + $60 (PMP certification renewal payment) = $224 ??? Is this typical?

Josh,

Yes., what you are seeing looks pretty normal. As you may know, I am a member of PMI-OC myself and so that is exactly the type of payment that I've been making: For two years I pay the PMI membership and PMI-OC membership, and then every third year I also pay the PMP renewal fee:
  • Year 1 and 2: $129 + $35 = $164
  • Year 3: $129 + $35 + $60 = $224
(A very long time ago, PMP renewal was free. But alas, that is no longer the case...)

I cannot tell you what the Company Code / Voucher fields are for. I never used them, but I assume it is used in cases where PMI offers special discounts to companies. But that's really just a guess. Does anyone else know?

In the end, there is really just one way to save money here, and that is by NOT being a PMI/PMI-OC member. But that means that you will have to pay the "non-member" fee whenever you attend a dinner meeting, seminar or conference. And over time that will in fact become more expensive than paying the yearly fees.

Thank you Cornelius.

Just one more question regarding this topic...

My Renewal Date isn't until 11 August 2017. If I renew now, would this add 3 years then from the 11 August 2017 date? Or, if I renewed now, would it add 3 years from now?

i.e., Would it be in my best interest to wait till 11 August 2017 and pay, so the clock doesn't start ticking now? Do this make sense?

Josh,

Your renewal cycle is completely independent from the date on which you renew. Renewing simply means that you complete the cycle. It never changes the dates. Renewing now simply adds 3 years to the end of the cycle for you.

Please take a look here www.project-management-prepcast.com/kune...t-year-of-cycle#8124 where we discuss and answer a very similar question.

Hello.
I am trying to renew my PMP. I have the required PDUs, and I got the e-mail from PMI telling me I've been approved for renewal.
However, when I log into the online certification system and click on 'Renew now' (which appears on my dashboard, I am just taken to a page which lists all possible PMI certifications and states my PMP is in good standing.
How should I be renewing?

One additional piece of information here.
You can accumulate only 20 PDU's between the time you renew your certification and your renewal date. Let me try to explain it with an example.
Say your existing certification is until December 2017 and you renew it for next cycle in October 2017. Your certification will be renewed until December 2020. If you plan to earn PDUs for next cycle, between October 2017 and December you can only accumulate/apply 20 PDUs for your next cycle.

Hi

I'm just trying to renew my PMP online as a Member of PMI.
Do you know why I'm asked to pay the full amount (non-member) during checkout ? ($150 instead of ($60)

Also I could not find anything on PMI.org explaining what are those vouchers and company codes ..(!?)

Many thanks,
Alex

Zeeshan,

Yes indeed. I have received a letter with the updated and printed certificate each time I complete a renewal.

Thank you Josh. I am a PMI and PMI-OC member too. This is the third cycle of my PMP Renewal, and the first time I am asked for PMP certification renewal fee. Your notes are helpful.

Hello,
I think I saw somewhere information that PMP has to be renewed only for several cycles (3?) and then it is valid lifetime without renewal.
However I am not able to locate this information anywhere on the PMI web page.
Have you ever encounter that?
Thank you,
Kasia

Kasia,

That information is incorrect. As a PMP you have to renew your certificate every 3 years:

Earn 60 PDUs > Renew > Earn 60 PDUs > Renew > Earn 60 PDUs > Renew > Earn 60 PDUs > Renew > And so on...

You bet!

The PM PrepCast Basic qualifies for 60 PDUs. You can read about how this works here: www.project-management-prepcast.com/pdus/earn-prepcast-pdus

Please note that you cannot use this course to earn your PDUs if you passed your PMP exam AFTER March 26th, 2018.

Will that work for you?

Let's assume someone has several PMP certifications like PMP + PMI-ACP. Does this mean you have to pay twice the renewal fee?
E.g. 150$ to renew your PMP and in addition to that 150$ to renew your PMI-ACP.

Thanks alot!

Kai,

Good question. Moderators who have multiple PMI Certs - can you help Kai out?
